Despair is the absence of optimism

A few days ago, I completed watching Band of Brothers. In one of the final parts, one of the real soldiers being interviewed before the movie commented that there came a time when there grew a collective sense that if you paid careful attention to your activities that you’d see the end of the war and live past it. Soldiers came out of despair toward the light of optimism.

Certainly fighting the flu is nothing like fighting an enemy as the brave men of World War II did, but I recently felt some despair over my sickness and am now feeling somewhat optimistic at the prospect of healthy days ahead.
